Kingdom of Loathing: The Flash Game is an homage to the browser-based game Kingdom of Loathing (KOL). This Flash game adds an interesting action element to the turn-based gameplay of KOL. The player selects a character class and embarks on an adventure in the kingdom, combating goblins, giants, and other fantasy creatures. This game adds more appeals to the eyes, with a variety of animations. The game was made to work in conjunction with KOL, allowing players to load their characters into the Flash game, fight monsters and gain experience, and then export it back to KOL. The game also supports team play, allowing a player to pair up with a fellow adventurer to defeat stronger enemies.
This game was the first one I made in Adobe Flash, and my first experience with Actionscript 3. During high school, I enjoyed playing the browser-based Kingdom of Loathing game. KOL is a turn-based game where the player visits unique locations fighting monsters, collecting items, or just general adventuring. Essentially, the only multi-player aspects of the game are in online chat, clans, and PvP. I thought it would be fun to create action-oriented version of the game, using the game's settings and art style.
I thoroughly enjoyed reinventing the gameplay of the original. One of my favorite ideas was how attacks are made during combat. The player is able to acquire different combat abilities by leveling up his character. These abilities are then selected by holding down a corresponding number key of of the keyboard and executed and aimed by clicking on the screen with the mouse. If the attack makes contact with an on-screen enemy, it damages that enemy. Different abilities have different ranges and movement patterns, making combat quite diverse. This innovation is then furthered by supporting online multi-player co-operative play.
