Deinos is a Flash-based 2D action platformer. It uses the Flixel library (the one used to make Canabalt) and was built with the DAME editor. The goal in creation was to create a classic retro style feel, emphasizing jumping challenges.
I feel that this game was successful in that it was enjoyable, quirky, and retro-styled. While I am happy with the game, I am not fully satisfied with the end result. Developing the game was quite a challenge and very much a learning experience. I had never completed a game of this size before and had never before used Flixel or DAME. Having completed Deinos, I now have a much better understanding of things like guiding the player, designing to avoid player frustration, and designing for technical systems. For example, I initially thought that making a boss battle wouldn't be too difficult, but after trying to program the boss battle against the scavenger dinosaur, I learned that it can be a nightmare. The results of that encounter came out okay, but it's nothing like I had envisioned.
I designed and programmed this game. I had someone add some graphical detail for the game and licensed the music and sounds.
If you would like to give Deinos a try, you can play it below or at Kongregate.
